Pop-Up Author – Susan Orlean Appearing

Susan Orlean

New York Times bestselling author Susan Orlean will talk about her work of non-fiction, The Library Book at 7:00 pm on Wednesday, November 14 at Haggard Library. On the morning of April 29, 1986, a fire alarm sounded in the Los Angeles Public Library.

The patrons and staff who had been cleared out of the building realized this was not a false alarm. As one fireman recounted later, “Once that first stack got going, it was Goodbye, Charlie.” The fire was disastrous: It reached 2,000 degrees and burned for more than seven hours. By the time it was extinguished, it had consumed 400,000 books and damaged 700,000 more. Over thirty years later, the mystery remains: Did someone purposefully set fire to the library—and if so, who?

This free event will be followed by a book signing with books available for purchase. Prior to the free event, super—fans can meet and chat with Susan Orlean in an intimate reception, hosted by Friends of Plano Public Library. Reception tickets include a copy of The Library Book and front-row seating at the free event following the reception.
